SPORTS CONTINUUM

Investing in youth, collegiate and professional sports.

Across the full spectrum of sports, we seek businesses and assets positioned to benefit from the continued institutionalization and commercialization of the sports ecosystem.

STRATEGY

Focus on the complete athlete lifecycle.

The Sports Continuum is our framework for the sports ecosystem as one connected market rather than separate industries. It spans three segments, youth, collegiate, and professional, along with the businesses that support athletes, organizations, and fans across each of them.

Our Sports strategy invests across the Sports Continuum, seeking businesses and assets positioned to benefit from the continued institutionalization and commercialization of sports.

We believe what began as the institutionalization of the largest professional sports leagues in North America is moving steadily down the continuum. Historically under-monetized professional sports leagues, women’s sports and emerging leagues seek capital and expertise to take full advantage of many of the same secular trends underlying the growth of the Big 4 leagues. NIL and revenue sharing brought new economics and new capital needs to college athletics, and the same forces are now reshaping youth sports and the broader market.

We prioritize opportunities where capital, professional management, technology, and operating expertise can help businesses scale within markets that remain fragmented or relatively under-institutionalized.

Experience across the ecosystem.

Weatherford’s approach to sports builds on our experience investing in complex, relationship-driven environments where institutions, stakeholders, governance, and long-term partnerships matter.

Since beginning to invest in sports in 2023, we have developed relationships and firsthand insight across youth, collegiate, and professional sports. By investing across the continuum rather than within a single segment, we can develop insight into how athletes, capital, audiences, and commercial opportunities move through the ecosystem—and where we believe our experience, relationships, and long-term perspective can contribute.

Dynamics Driving Opportunity.

Institutionalization

A more investable sports ecosystem

Many parts of sports remain fragmented and as the industry institutionalizes, capital and operating expertise can help create better businesses and experiences for all industry stakeholders.

Changing Economics

New models for athletes, organizations, and owners

Athlete compensation, revenue sharing, ownership structures, media economics, and commercial models are changing how capital moves through sports and creating new operating and investment needs across the ecosystem.

Expanding Commercialization

More ways to participate, engage, and create value

Media, sponsorship, licensing, ticketing, events, technology, data, and other commercial opportunities are expanding how athletes, teams, leagues, conferences, and sports businesses engage their audiences and generate revenue.

An Interconnected Ecosystem

Opportunity across the continuum

Youth, collegiate, and professional sports are distinct but increasingly connected. Investing across the continuum gives us a broader view of how athletes, capital, audiences, and commercial opportunities move through the ecosystem - from early participation, development and fandom through collegiate athletics and professional leagues.

What We Look For.

Established Business Models

Businesses and assets with demonstrated market traction, identifiable revenue models, and evidence of product or service demand.

Attractive Market Structures

Segments where fragmentation, scarcity, limited institutional capital, or structural change can create opportunities for scaled operators.

Recurring or Visible Revenue

Business models supported by participation fees, tuition, sponsorships, media rights, ticketing, licensing, franchise economics, contracted revenues, or other identifiable sources of recurring or visible cash flow.

Opportunities for Institutionalization

Businesses and assets where professional management, capital, technology, operating infrastructure, or consolidation can support the next stage of growth.

Strong Stakeholder Relationships

Businesses operating within ecosystems where relationships with athletes, families, universities, leagues, sponsors, media partners, municipalities, or other institutions are important to long-term success.

Multiple Paths to Growth

Opportunities to grow organically or through acquisitions, new markets, additional products and services, commercial partnerships, or increased monetization of an existing customer or fan base.

The Sports Continuum.

The Sports Continuum is our framework for the sports ecosystem as one connected market rather than separate industries. It spans three segments, youth, collegiate, and professional, along with the businesses that support athletes, organizations, and fans across each of them.

Youth

Youth sports is a large, fragmented market undergoing increasing professionalization. We invest in businesses supporting athlete development and advancement, including training and development platforms, clubs and academies, tournaments and events, recruiting and athlete services, technology, and other businesses supporting the broader athlete-development ecosystem.

Collegiate

College athletics is undergoing significant economic change. Athlete compensation, revenue sharing, conference realignment, media economics, and increasing commercial demands are creating new capital and operating needs across universities, conferences, and the businesses that support them. We seek opportunities across conferences, athletic programs, infrastructure, technology, and related commercial solutions.

Professional

We invest in teams, leagues, and sports-adjacent businesses across the professional sports ecosystem. Our opportunity set extends beyond Big 4 Leagues franchises to established and emerging leagues, women’s sports, global sports properties, and the businesses and infrastructure surrounding professional competition. We seek opportunities where expanding audiences, evolving media economics, professionalization, and access to capital can support growth.

Our investments span distinct markets and business models, but we see recurring themes across the businesses we back. These themes are representative of our investment activity and are not intended to define the full scope of the Sports Continuum strategy.
